White Wine Varieties

Below is an alphabetical list of wine and grape varieties available (through us) to the individual home winemaker. As best possible, I have related the description to the wine kits and juices available to us rather than a commercial equivalent, so as you may get a better feel for what your homemade wines should be like. Likewise, I have omitted varieties that are not available to us.

Bernkastler German white, named after the town in the Musette valley. Soft dry white similar to Riesling, has a mild floral bouquet.
Bordailles White Crisp and delicate on the palate, made in the Bordailles style, this wine boasts a faintly herbaceous flavour. A clean vinous bouquet predominates. Best well-aged. A perfect compliment to shell-fish of any kind.
Brise de Mers* A wine delicate and aromatic in nature. Dry and crisp, fresh in flavour, you'll appreciate its slight leafy bouquet. Best consumed early. Suitable for lighter meals.
Bourgeron White Smooth in flavour, clean in taste, you'll savour soft citrus on the tongue with a crisp, leafy bouquet. Best consumed young. Suitable for most white meats and grilled or barbecued chicken. Chardonnay should be the feature grape.
Chamblaise The California style is made from a blend of Chardonnay and Semillon. A great-natured wine with a full-bodied, clean taste. Citrus and melon flavours - an early consumer. Due to its crowd-pleasing nature, its the perfect wedding wine. It’s also an excellent pool-side companion.
Chardonnay A full-bodied wine that will please the sophisticated palate with its crisp, green apple bouquet and hearty deep melon flavours. One of the finest wines on the market if you value depth. Oaking is necessary in bringing out the natural vanilla aroma. Improves greatly with age. The perfect partner for shellfish or chicken.
Chardonnay-Semillon The combination of these two exceptional varieties with oak gives a depth of complexity and character. Dry wine, fruity bouquet. Straw to pale gold colour.
Chardon Fume* A fine dry table wine. Fresh and fruity with a light, elegant, aromatic bouquet. The Fume reputation of this wine is derived from the flinty qualities of the Sauvignon Blanc grape.
Chenin Blanc Traditionally made purely from the Chenin Blanc grape, it has a dominant flavour, slightly fruity and unique in many ways. You'll savour apple and honey flavours. Great in its youth, while flavours of apple and honey are released with ageing. An under- estimated wine that will enhance your cellar. A personal wine, excellent to savour .
Coteau Royal Blanc* Typical white, soft, mild.
Cuvee Speciale Means "Vat full of special vintage" - can also mean plain white wine - nothing speciale.
Emerald Riesling Clean, flowery and fruity with a crisp aftertaste. Strictly Californian variety of Riesling.
Frascati Italian dry white, similar to Soave. Used in Italy for house wine, also makes a great Spumante.
French Columbard Traditionally a blending grape, its flavours are too pronounced to bury. Crisp, acidic and extremely fragrant in it’s youth. Best with fish and poultry.
Frontignan Crowd pleasing white derived from Muscat style.   Soft, fragrant and dry.
Fume Blanc Primarily made with Sauvignon Blanc, it possesses a smoky, yet rich flavour. You'll savour a crisp aroma reminiscent of freshly cut grass. A subtle oakiness gives this wine a character like no other. Ages well with additional oaking. Great with lobster and crab as well as pasta with cream sauces.
Gewurztraminer Extremely spicy in flavour and aroma, it’s traditionally an Alsation wine which offers a frontal attack on your taste buds. Well-aged, it becomes truly distinctive. Best served with Oriental, Thai, Cajun and Mexican foods.
Hock Light pale German white with a slight fruitiness. Certainly suitable as an everyday table wine. A popular wine for weddings and social events, because of its non-offensive nature and approachability.
House White Light, dry table wine with no standout qualities, except that everyone can approach it without difficulty.
Johannisberg Riesling A light coloured, delicately flavoured wine which offers a slight tartness. The clean taste is complimented by a flinty lime flavour and spicy bouquet. A premium German style wine that ages well. A perfect marriage with fresh water fish.
Liebfraumilch A delightful blend of Rieslings, fruity in aroma and clean in taste. Well-balanced as both a dry, crisp wine or as a medium sweet wine. Pleasant in its youth. A great summer sipper. Some kits, like Selection and Vintner's Reserve have an additional package of sweetner in the box for you to add to enhance the fruits and smooth the wine out to match its commercial equivalent.
Manoir Blanc* A delicious dry wine with mild bouquet and flavour. Best used when young and lively. Great with seafood. Very similar to Pinot Blanc.
Musette Well-balanced and full of fruit with earthy qualities. It is light in body with a cool, clean flavour. Typically consumed off-dry, it’s an early consumer. A lunch-time wine, suitable for light foods and conversation.
Muscat Light in body & colour. Citrus dominates.
Niersteiner Nierstein is a small town in the Rhineland district of Germany noted for is high quality white wines. It is the same quality that is stressed with this fine blend.
Piesporter Considered one of the finest Riesling style wines of the valley. Light on the pallet yet elegant. Fresh, full, soft and fruity. Delicate flowery bouquet, lots of grapefruit & citrus flavour when young.
Pinot Blanc A richly toned, delicate wine with an elegant soft flavour and velvety fragrance. The white counterpart of Pinot Noir.
Pinot Chardonnay See Chardonnay
Pinot Grigio Also known as Pinot Gris. In the glass, a pale straw colour - on the palate, dry with overtones of green melon leading to a crisp, clean finish. A bouquet of honey and herbs completes the experience. Ideal with fish, grilled chicken, veal scaloppini and pasta in cream sauces.
Rhine Light German wine. Fresh, pale, and generic.
Riesling A Johannisberg Riesling blend, usually, to create a style of wine desired by the kit manufacturer. Soft, fruity and crowd pleasing (great with a touch of sugar if desired).
Rioja Blanco The wines of the Rioja are made in the Bordeaux manner and are often compared to their French counterparts. A delicious, dry, but mellow, pale golden table wine with a fresh and lively character.
Ruisseau Blanc* A medium-bodied dry wine with golden overtones, it gives the noble Chardonnay grape a reputation that is both rich and racy. In the nose, pear and apple - in the mouth, the toasted silkiness of butterscotch, vanilla and spice. Ages gracefully.
Sauvignon Blanc Bordaille's best grape. A clean, refreshing wine offering a lightly fruity aroma with a herbaceous hint. Green, herbal flavours with a touch of mint are meant to be savoured. A unique French-style wine that ages well.
Semillon Noted for its sustenance and pleasing distinctive bouquet. Makes an excellent crisp, clean, dry table wine while at the same time being the variety of preference for sweeter white table wines.
Soave A fresh, fragrant, well balanced, dry white wine carrying the enviable reputation as the best Italian White. The wine is consumed young and very well chilled.
Trebbiano Australia's version of Chamblaise.
Val de Grace* Typical Bordailles white, made mostly with Sauvignon Blanc.
Val du Domaine* Chardonnay & Muscat blend. Get the body and complexity of Chardonnay with some citrus overtones from the Muscat. Refreshing.
Verdiccio Crisp, clean and slightly herbaceous best describes this wine. Herbal aromas dominate the bouquet, while flavours of lemon and pear entice the palate. The finish is crisp and clean. For peak flavour, enjoy while young. At meals, Verdiccio goes well with pastas in seafood sauce and risotto.
Vinho Verde This wine derives its name from the fact that it is produced from barely ripe grapes thus "Green Wine". A light, fruity, refreshing wine that is always consumed young.
