Alicante
Primarily used in blends of standard red table and port wines because of its colour.
"Chianti" style.
Grenache
Used in the production of rose wines. It is generally given more tannin and acid by
blending with Petite Syrah.
Carignane
Used for the production of standard quality red and rose table wines.
Barbera
Used to produce quality red table wines that are full-bodied, higher in acid content, and
low in tannin.
Ruby Cabernet
A cross of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignane, the resulting wine has a brilliant deep ruby
colour and attractive fruity aroma. Used to produce a quality red table wine.
Premium Burgundy
Full-bodied dry red dinner wine with a pronounced flavour, body, and bouquet as well as a
deep red colour. Is made from a number of different grape varieties including Gamay,
Petite Syrah, Pinot Noir, Carignane, & Zinfandel.
Zinfandel
Has a distinctive fruity raspberry-like flavour and aroma. Also used in the production of
standard red table wines or in blends. Full-bodied, with a substantial amount of tannin.
Malbec
Used for the production of red table wines, commonly used for blending with other wines.
Gamay
Produces a fruity, distinctive red or rosé table wine. This variety is also very popular,
because it matures very quickly, therefore can be consumed as a young wine -
"Beaujolais Nouveau" style.
Chianti Style
Made from a mixture of grape varieties mainly Sangiovese, but Merlot, Petit Syrah,
Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Malvasia are also used. Chianti wines are known for their
fresh, fruity flavour, with a lively acidity. Chianti, when they are of riserva quality
(aged for 1-3 years) have more body and backbone. These are wines that develop with bottle
age all kinds of subtle flavours even to the extend of resembling Old Burgundy or Old
Claret.
Cabernet Sauvignon
Wines made from this variety usually have a distinctive fruity taste and aroma. Produces a
full-bodied, dry table wine. It can be astringent when young, but when aged for many years
it achieves a velvety richness. Cabernet Sauvignon can be blended with Merlot to reduce
the aging time. Has managed to become the great, all-purpose, omnipresent red wine grape
of the world.
Merlot
Primarily for blending with Cabernet Sauvignon to soften the wines and to shorten the
aging requirement. Merlot made as a varietal type wine has a Cabernet-like aroma and
flavour, with moderate tannin and acidity. The wine is deep ruby in colour. It matures
relatively early, as compared with Cabernet Sauvignon.
Pinot Noir
Young Pinot Noir is reminiscent of raspberries. As the wine matures, the flavours develop
and taste becomes smoother. Has an excellent aroma, flavour and a soft finish.
Petite Syrah
Produces standard red table wine because of its good, stable colour. Also blends well
since skins have abundant colour and tannin. Petite Syrah makes a good table wine with
distinctive, recognizable flavour and moderate acidity. Used in the more expensive
Burgundy type wines.
Barolo
In its youth Barolo is tough and unforgiving, with deep colour and masses of Tannin,
Acidity, and quite Fruity, nonetheless Barolo remains a serious, solid mouthful of wine.
With age Barolo develops a softer finish.
Cabernet Franc
An early maturing wine, which has a spicy Cabernet-type aroma. Occasionally blended with
Cabernet Sauvignon.
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
Montepulciano is a grape variety grown in the wild hills of Abruzzo, Italy. Makes an
excellent full-bodied, deep coloured dry red wine, with moderate tannin and acidity.
Lambrusco
A positively red and firmly medium dry wine. It has a distinctive cherry like flavour with
good tannin.
Chateau de La Reine
The most famous wine of the southern Rhone Valley. Some grape varieties include Grenache,
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Petite Syrah, etc... Thirteen grape varieties are
allowed altogether, but not all are used. It is a rich scented wine that is powerful and
full-flavoured. Firmly tannic in its youth and requires some aging.

Muscat
Used to produce high quality delicately flavoured varietal muscat wines, usually sweet.
Muscat grapes with the characteristic muscat flavour and aroma have also become more
popular in recent years. Muscat can vary from dry to very sweet. Also used for sweet
sparkling wine, notably "Asti Spumante".
Palomino
An important variety used for sherry, production. Also used for blending in champagne or
for white table wine.
Thompson Seedless
Used for the production of white table wines or light coloured wines which are well
balanced and flavoured. Also used in blending with other varieties.
French Colombard
Produces a fruity wine of good acidity, commonly used in generic wines and occasionally as
a varietal, producing quality white table wines. Well suited for sparkling wine
production.
Chenin Blanc
Used to produce quality white table wines, usually under its varietal name "Chenin
Blanc". Can be used in sparkling wine production, in blending with premium white
table wines, and for sweet table wines, usually fruity in character. Also used in the
production of white wines labelled as "White Pinot".
Premium Chablis
A dry white dinner wine, Chablis has a slightly fruity flavour and a delicate pale colour.
It is full-bodied, and made from a number of white grape varieties, including Chardonnay,
Chenin Blanc. Chablis-type wines named for their respective grapes and having their
distinct flavours and aromas. Chablis develops more complex flavours with bottle aging.
Johannisberg Riesling
Light-bodied white dinner wine, pale golden in colour, sometimes called White Riesling.
Primarily used to produce quality white table wines under the varietal label, but may also
be used for blending. These table wines are distinct in aroma, character, and flavour.
These wines are of high quality and very famous in Europe.
Gewurztraminer
Produces a distinctive white varietal table wine which has a spicy richness, full-bodied
muscat-like aroma. The wine generally shows delightful balance.
Sauvignon Blanc
Used for the production of quality white table wines by itself or by blending. It may be
used in the production of both dry and naturally sweet table wines of high quality.
Sauvignon Blanc oak aged, gives it a fuller, richer flavour, with a softer, less obvious
varietal character, than the unoaked version. Also used in making "Fume Blanc".
Soave Style
It comes from a mixture of grape varieties of which Trebbiano is the principle one. It is
delicately straw coloured, with a subtle grassy nose, and on the palate it has a full
leafy flavour. There is acidity, but it is dry, rather than crisp.
Fumé Blanc
The oaked Fume Blanc style of wine has a similarity to Chardonnay, originating from the
taste of oak, rather than the taste of the grapes. These are wines with a marked
resemblance to the Graves. The link is sometimes a little Sémillion in the blend too, as
there is in the Graves.
Pinot Chardonnay
Makes a dry table wine of high quality, with a distinctive flavour. Grapes should be ripe
for full wine flavour. Chardonnay is the grape of the great White Burgundies, which are
fermented and matured in oak.
Trebbiano
An Italian variety, which produces a full-bodied, dry fragrant wine. Primarily used for
distilling, and often used for blending.
Ugni Blanc
Produces a full-bodied, fragrant white wine.
Pinot Grigio
An Italian variety, which produces some of the most popular dry white and sparkling wines.
It is generally rather light, with a bit of fruit and some acidity.
Pinot Bianco
A popular variety grown in Northern Italy, which produces a clear white wine with an
apple-like taste. Aging this white variety can result in a delicious wine with a honeyed
fullness.
Tocai
Italian grape producing dry wines of great character.
Semillon
Good all purpose variety, it may be used for either dry or sweet table wine. Can also be
used or blending with Chardonnay, or Sauvignon Blanc.
Liebfraumilch
Low in acid and well-suited to drinking on its own without food. A Liebfraumilch, will
consist of six or more different wines and grape varieties i.e: Riesling, Gewurztraminer.
Final results - a wine that is soft and fruity.
White Burgundy
Has for generations been thought of as the world's leading dry white wine. Wines have a
succulent richness, yet are totally dry.
Blush Chardonnay
Light, pink wines made from red grapes, but given minimal skin contact. Makes a dry table
wine.
White Zinfandel
Zinfandel is above all versatile. It makes all manner of wines. A full-bodied pink wine,
made from the red grape "Zinfandel", but given minimal skin contact.
